Overview
The failure of most apocalypse roleplay is that nothing is actually scarce, so every character has food, fuel and ammunition and the setting stops mattering. This layout makes scarcity structural. #supply-ledger is a read-only running count of what the settlement holds, updated by storytellers after each scavenging run, and it is the channel the whole tone depends on. #scavenging-runs is where a group declares what they are going out for, and #run-results is written by a storyteller with what was found and what it cost. Locations are the map: #the-settlement as the safe centre, #the-outskirts, #the-ruins, #the-highway and #the-woods, each with a stated danger level so a player knows what they are walking into. #injuries-and-conditions is the persistence layer: a wound is recorded and stays recorded until it is treated, which is what makes a risky decision feel risky. The Settlement covers the social half that survival fiction actually runs on: #council for decisions about rationing and admissions, #work-assignments, and #the-fire for the quiet character scenes between crises. Out of Character has #character-sheets with a required weakness, #plot-hooks and #lfrp. Storytellers keep a hidden area for the threats the settlement has not met yet.
When to use it
Post-apocalyptic roleplay collapses when scarcity is only described: characters are never actually short of anything, wounds are forgotten by the next scene, and the setting becomes ordinary drama with rubble in the background. This layout tracks supplies in a public ledger, records injuries until they are treated, and gives each location a stated danger level so risk is a decision rather than a surprise.
What makes it different
- A public supply ledger, which is the single channel the setting's tone depends on.
- Injuries persist in writing until treated, so a risky choice actually carries risk.
- Every location states its danger level, making risk a decision rather than an ambush.
- A council channel, because survival fiction runs on rationing arguments more than combat.
Recommended Vetox setup
Self-Roles
Post a Self-Roles panel in #your-role-in-the-settlement so a scavenging call reaches the characters who do that work.
Embed Messages
Use Embed Messages for #supply-ledger so the counts are edited in place rather than buried under new posts.
Starboard
Point Starboard at #the-fire so the quiet character scenes are preserved alongside the dramatic ones.
Auto Roles
Assign a Newcomer role on arrival so the in-character locations stay closed until a sheet is approved.
Questions
Does tracking supplies not become bookkeeping?
Only if you track everything. The ledger holds four or five categories — food, water, fuel, medicine, ammunition — as rough counts rather than exact numbers, updated after runs rather than continuously. That is enough for the council to argue about rationing and for a scavenging run to matter, and it takes a storyteller two minutes. Detailed inventories are where these systems die.
How do persistent injuries work in practice?
A storyteller records the injury with what it prevents and what would treat it. The player writes it into their scenes, and it stays until the treatment is found or the healing time passes. The point is not realism, it is that a character who takes a risk carries something out of it, which is the difference between tension and theatre.
Common mistakes
- Describing scarcity without tracking it, so characters are never actually short of anything.
- Forgetting injuries between scenes, which removes every consequence from a dangerous choice.
- Running only crises, when survival fiction lives on the quiet scenes between them.
Consider instead
- Fantasy Kingdom Roleplay The setting is high fantasy with factions and courts rather than scarcity and survival.
- Roleplay Starter The group is small and new, and a resource system would be overhead.
