Overview

A city is districts, and the districts are categories. Downtown has Central Plaza, the City Hall Lobby, the Grand Hotel Lobby, the Night Market, the Metro Station, Police Headquarters and the Courthouse Steps; the Districts have Harborside Docks, the Old Town Diner, Riverside Park, the University Campus, General Hospital, the Industrial Yards, the Underpass, the Shopping Mall and Suburb Streets; Apartments has five places to live, from Skyline Towers to a Roadside Motel, so a character has a home scene of their own. Jobs and factions are roles: City Police, City Hall, the Syndicate, Hospital Staff, Press, Business Owners and Students. Six of them have a headquarters in Faction HQs that only that role and the game masters can see, so the precinct briefing room and the Syndicate's back room are the two sides of every crime plot. City News is the read-only #city-news written by the Press and game masters, a #police-scanner only the police post to, and #classifieds for in-character ads. City Records is the read-only lore: map, districts guide, jobs and factions, laws, history. Out of Character has chat, plot planning, a #character-profiles forum tagged by job and #lfrp; Plots and Events has a read-only #plot-board, signups and a city events channel. Visitors see OOC only until a storyteller approves their character. Voice has a hangout, two session rooms and a Radio Show stage.

When to use it

Your city roleplay has one downtown channel where a police raid, a first date and a hospital scene are all happening at once, and the crime faction plans in DMs that nobody can moderate. This layout gives the city districts, venues and apartments, gives every job and faction a role and the important ones a hidden headquarters, puts the police scanner and the newspaper where the whole city can read them, and keeps visitors outside the city until their character is approved.

What makes it different

  • Twenty-one in-character locations across Downtown, the Districts and five Apartments.
  • Seven jobs and factions as roles, six with a hidden headquarters visible only to that role and the game masters.
  • #city-news is written by the Press, #police-scanner by the police, and both are read by everyone.
  • City Records is a read-only library for the map, laws and history.
  • Visitors are kept outside the city's channels until their character profile is approved.

Recommended Vetox setup

  • Applications

An application panel in #resident-applications for the character profile, reviewed in #application-reviews with the Resident role granted on approval.

  • Self-Roles

A Self-Roles panel in #pick-your-job for the seven job and faction roles, so taking a job unlocks its headquarters without a moderator.

  • Reminders

A Reminder in #plot-board before each scheduled plot, so the players signed up in #event-signups are online when the game master starts.

  • Logs

Logs into #mod-logs in the Storyteller Room, so a deleted post in #syndicate-back-room can be recovered if a plot dispute needs it.

  • Starboard

A Starboard fed from the district channels, so the city's best scenes are collected where new residents can read them.

Questions

How do police and crime plots work without the police reading everything?

The police plan in #precinct-briefing-room and the Syndicate in #syndicate-back-room; each is visible only to its role and the game masters. The confrontation happens in a public location channel, and the #police-scanner tells the city what the police want it to know.

Does every character need a job?

No. A resident with no job role sees every public district and apartment. Job roles add a headquarters and a place in the city's institutions; Students and Business Owners are jobs too, with their own HQ channels where it makes sense.

Where does a character live?

Pick an apartment channel: Skyline Towers, Harbor Lofts, Maple Street Houses, Campus Housing or the Roadside Motel. Home scenes run there in threads named for the character.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the crime faction plan in public channels, which means the police faction reads every plot before it happens.
  • Making one channel per shop and cafe, which spreads a small cast across thirty empty rooms.
