COURSE INFO
- start-here
How the course runs on this server, the classroom rules and where to hand in work. Open a ticket here for anything personal.
- course-announcements
What changed this week: due dates moved, readings added, sessions cancelled. Instructor only.
- syllabus
The course plan, the grading policy and the late-work rule. If it is not in here, it is not policy.
- course-calendar
Every session, deadline and exam date in one place.
- reading-list
What to read before each session, posted a week ahead.
CLASSWORK
- assignments
One message per assignment with the brief, the rubric and the due date. Ask about it in #questions, not here.
- lecture-slides
Slides and recordings after each session.
- questions
One question per thread. Tag it with the week or the topic so the next student can find the answer.
- submissions
Hand in work here. You can post but cannot read what others posted; the instructor and the TA can.
- class-chat
The open room. Study partners, a joke about the reading, anything that is not a question for the instructor.
OFFICE HOURS
- office-hours-queue30s slowmode
Post one line with what you want to discuss. The instructor pulls names into Office Hours in order.

STAFF
- instructor-ta-chat
Who grades what, which student needs a nudge, what to change next term.

Overview
A classroom for one instructor teaching one course to a few dozen students, online or as the companion to a physical class. Everything the instructor publishes lives in channels students can read but not reply in: #course-announcements for what changed this week, #syllabus for the plan and the grading policy, #course-calendar for dates and #reading-list for what to read before each session, so a deadline is never pushed off screen by a conversation. Students do their talking in #questions, a forum where each question is its own thread tagged by week or by topic, and in #class-chat, the one open room. #submissions is the channel that makes this layout different from a group chat: students can post their work there, but ReadMessageHistory is denied, so a student never sees what a classmate handed in while the instructor and the teaching assistant see everything. Office hours run on voice: students add themselves to #office-hours-queue and the instructor pulls the next name into the five-seat Office Hours room; Study Room is open for students who want to work together. A hidden staff area holds #instructor-ta-chat, #grading-notes and a Staff Call for the instructor and the assistant.
When to use it
You teach one course and your students keep asking for a link you posted a fortnight ago, hand in work by direct message, and never read the announcement they need because it scrolled away. This layout gives every instructor message a read-only home, moves questions into a forum where a thread survives the week, and adds a submissions channel where a student can hand in work without anyone else reading it.
What makes it different
- #submissions lets students post work but denies ReadMessageHistory, so only staff can read what was handed in.
- Syllabus, calendar, reading list and assignments are read-only, so nothing the instructor posts gets buried.
- #questions is a forum tagged by week, so an answer given in week three is still findable in week ten.
- #office-hours-queue plus a five-seat Office Hours room replaces the pile-up of everyone joining at once.
- Auditor is a role that can read everything but cannot submit, for observers and repeat students.
Recommended Vetox setup
Auto Roles
Give Student on join so the #questions forum and #submissions open the moment someone accepts the invite, without the instructor assigning anything.
Reminders
Schedule a Reminder in #assignments two days before each due date so the deadline appears again when it matters.
Tickets
Put a ticket panel in #start-here for grade questions and extensions, so personal matters stay out of #class-chat.
Embed Messages
Post the syllabus in #syllabus as an Embed Message you can edit in place, so the pinned version is always the current one.
Questions
Can students really not see each other's submissions?
They cannot read the channel history. ReadMessageHistory is denied for everyone and allowed only for Instructor and Teaching Assistant, so a student sees the channel, posts their file and cannot scroll back to what anyone else posted. A message that arrives while a student has the channel open is briefly visible, so the rule of thumb is to post and leave.
What is the Auditor role for?
Someone who follows the course without being graded: a colleague, a parent, a student retaking it. Auditor can read every course channel and ask in #questions, but is denied posting in #submissions.
How do office hours work with one voice room?
Students post a line in #office-hours-queue when they want a slot. The Office Hours room is capped at five, so the instructor works through the queue in order and Study Room takes anyone who is waiting and wants to work with a classmate meanwhile.
Common mistakes
- Letting students reply in #assignments, which turns the one channel that must stay clean into a thread of clarifications nobody can find later.
- Collecting work by direct message, which is why a submissions channel with ReadMessageHistory denied exists.
Consider instead
- University Course with TAs The course has several sections run by teaching assistants and a lecture large enough to need a stage.
- School Department You run more than one class in the same server and students should only see the ones they are enrolled in.
