Overview
A full-time coding bootcamp running one cohort at a time, with instructors, teaching assistants, a career coach and an alumni network that stays after graduation. The COHORT category is the working day: #daily-standup takes one message per student each morning with yesterday, today and blockers, #lecture-links and #exercises are read-only feeds from the instructors, #exercise-help and #code-review-requests are where students ask, #pairing-board matches pair-programming partners, the Cohort Classroom is a stage for the live lecture and Breakout 1 and 2 are the rooms pairs split into. Projects live in a forum, #projects, tagged by week and by state so a capstone thread runs for its whole three weeks, with #demo-day-signups and #capstone-teams beside it. CAREER SERVICES is run by the coach: #job-board and #hiring-partner-events are read-only, #resume-and-portfolio-review is a drop box where a student posts a CV that only staff can read, and the two-seat Mock Interview Room is where practice interviews happen. Alumni lose the cohort channels when they graduate and gain the ALUMNI wing, #alumni-lounge, #referrals-and-openings and #mentor-a-student, so graduates keep helping without crowding the current cohort. Staff have a hidden area with #student-progress, #curriculum-drafts and a Staff Sync room.
When to use it
The cohort's standups, the instructor's links, the career coach's job posts and last year's graduates all share three channels, and a student's CV was posted where the whole cohort could read it. This layout gives the working day its own category, puts projects in a forum that lasts as long as the build, makes CV review a drop box only staff can read, and moves graduates into an alumni wing where they can refer and mentor without reading the current cohort's standups.
What makes it different
- #daily-standup with a slowmode gives every student one morning post and stops it becoming a chat.
- #resume-and-portfolio-review is a drop box where students post a CV that only the coach and instructors can read.
- #projects is a forum tagged by week and state, so a capstone thread runs for its full three weeks.
- Alumni are hidden from the COHORT category and get their own wing for referrals and mentoring.
- The Cohort Classroom is a stage and Breakout 1 and 2 are voice rooms, so a lecture splits into pairs cleanly.
Recommended Vetox setup
Streaks
Turn on Streaks for #daily-standup so a student who posts every morning builds a visible run and a missed day is noticed by them first.
Reminders
Schedule a Reminder in #daily-standup at the start of each day and in #demo-day-signups a week before demo day.
Self-Roles
Post a Self-Roles panel in #orientation for Frontend Track, Backend Track and Data Track so the coach can ping the right students about a job.
Logs
Send role changes to #bootcamp-logs so the lead can see when a student was moved from Student to Alumni.
Temp Voice
Point Temp Voice at Breakout 1 so a cohort of thirty splitting into fifteen pairs gets rooms on demand instead of two.
Questions
What happens when a cohort graduates?
Swap Student for Alumni on each graduate. The COHORT category is hidden from Alumni, so their view changes from standups and exercises to #alumni-lounge, #referrals-and-openings and #mentor-a-student. The next cohort starts in a clean category.
Can other students see my CV in the review channel?
No. #resume-and-portfolio-review denies reading the history for everyone except the Career Coach, the instructors and the lead. You post it, they read it, feedback comes back in a ticket or a mock interview.
How do pairs get their own voice rooms?
Two Breakout rooms are included. With Temp Voice pointed at Breakout 1, every pair that joins gets its own room and the room disappears when they leave, so a cohort of thirty does not need fifteen permanent channels.
Common mistakes
- Keeping graduates in the cohort channels, which fills the current cohort's standup with people who finished months ago.
- Running standup in the general chat, where the third message of the morning is already a link and the standups are gone.
Consider instead
- University Course with TAs The program is lecture-and-problem-set based with sections rather than a daily working cohort.
