Overview

A large course with one professor, a head TA and a team of teaching assistants each running their own section. The lecture side is public to every enrolled student: #lecture-notes and #lecture-recordings are read-only, #lecture-questions is open with a short slowmode, and the Lecture Hall is a stage channel where the professor speaks and a student raises a hand to be brought up. Sections are the part that a single classroom layout cannot do: #section-a, #section-b and #section-c and their three voice rooms are hidden from everyone and opened by the matching Section role, so a TA talks to their own thirty students and not to the whole cohort. Problem sets get a forum, #problem-sets, with a tag per set so the thread about PS3 question 4 is still there during finals, and #pset-hints is where TAs post the official nudge without arguing in the thread. Office hours are split: a three-seat Professor Office Hours room and two TA Office Hours rooms, with #oh-queue as the waiting list. #regrade-requests and #exam-info sit in the read-only COURSE DESK next to #syllabus-and-policies and #lecture-schedule. The TA ROOM is hidden and holds #grading-rubrics, #regrade-queue, #section-planning and a Staff Meeting voice room, so grading decisions never leak into a student channel.

When to use it

The course has three sections and one server, so every section's logistics land in one channel, students from section B answer questions meant for section A's TA, and regrade arguments happen in public. This layout gives each section a hidden text and voice pair keyed to a role, keeps lectures on a stage where only the professor is live by default, and moves grading and regrades into a room students cannot see.

What makes it different

Recommended Vetox setup

Tickets
Put a ticket panel in #regrade-requests so a regrade opens as a private thread between the student and the TA, and #regrade-queue is where TAs track it.

Questions

How do students end up in the right section?

They receive the Section A, B or C role, either from a TA or from a Self-Roles panel. The role is the only thing that reveals that section's channel and voice room; a student holding no Section role sees the lectures, the problem sets and the lounge but no section.

Why is the lecture a stage channel and not a voice channel?

In a stage, only speakers are audible and everyone else is in the audience. The professor lectures without a hundred open microphones, and a student who wants to ask something requests to speak and is brought up by a TA.

What is the difference between #pset-hints and the forum?

The forum is where students discuss a set, one thread per question. #pset-hints is read-only and holds the official clarification or nudge from the TAs, so a student does not have to read a forty-message thread to find out whether the typo in question 2 was fixed.

Common mistakes

Making one shared section channel instead of three hidden ones, which is how students end up following the wrong TA's instructions.
Letting students unmute freely in the Lecture Hall instead of using a stage, so the recording is full of background noise.

Consider instead
