Overview

An academy preparing a cohort for one standardized exam, run by instructors with mentors who sat the exam recently. The exam's sections each get a channel, #quant-section, #verbal-section, #reading-section, #essay-section and #science-section, where an instructor answers questions about that part of the paper. DAILY DRILL is the routine: #question-of-the-day is posted by staff and answered in threads, #timing-drills carries short timed sets, and #mistakes-log is a forum where every student keeps one thread of the questions they got wrong, tagged by section, which is the single most useful revision document they will own. MOCK TESTS is where the pressure is rehearsed: #mock-test-schedule is read-only, #mock-scores is a drop box where a student posts their score and only staff can read it, #score-review-requests opens a ticket, and the Proctored Mock and Timed Section rooms deny speaking so a full-length mock happens in silence with an instructor able to talk. Mentors have #ask-a-mentor, #study-strategies and a Mentor Office Hours room; students have #prep-chat and #motivation-and-milestones. Spring Sitting and Autumn Sitting are roles for which exam date a student is targeting, so a reminder about registration reaches the right half of the cohort. Staff have a hidden area with an instructor room, a mentor room and #score-tracking.

When to use it

Everyone in the server is sitting the same exam, but the question of the day drowns in chat, mock scores get posted publicly and compared, and the mistakes a student made in March are lost by June. This layout gives the daily drill and the mock tests their own channels, keeps scores between the student and the staff, and gives every student a mistakes thread that lasts until exam day.

Questions

How does the mistakes log work?

Each student opens one thread in the #mistakes-log forum with their name and adds a post every time they get a question wrong: the question type, why they missed it, the rule they forgot. The section tags let them filter it the week before the exam.

Who can see mock scores?

Only the instructors, the mentors and the director. #mock-scores denies reading the history for everyone else, so a student posts their score and cannot see anyone else's. #score-tracking in the staff area is where staff keep the cohort overview.

What are the mentors for?

Mentors are recent high scorers rather than teachers. They answer in #ask-a-mentor, post in #study-strategies and hold Mentor Office Hours; they can read mock scores to advise a student but cannot change anything in the academy.

Common mistakes

Letting students post mock scores in the open, which turns every mock into a ranking and quiet students into absent ones.
Running mocks in a normal voice room, so one unmuted microphone breaks the timing for everyone.
