Overview

A small co-op of homeschooling families who share classes, outings and materials, run by a coordinator and the parents who teach. The CO-OP BOARD is read-only: #co-op-notices for what is on, #this-weeks-schedule for who teaches what and where, and #co-op-guidelines. FAMILIES is where the co-op talks: #family-introductions for each household to say who they are and which ages they have, #family-chat for everything else, and #carpool-and-logistics for who is driving whom to the Thursday class. RESOURCES BY AGE is four channels, #early-years-resources, #elementary-resources, #middle-school-resources and #high-school-resources, so a parent looking for a fractions worksheet does not scroll past a chemistry syllabus. OUTINGS holds #field-trip-planning, #trip-signups and #outing-photos. Two voice rooms cover the online side: Co-op Class for a lesson taught over voice and Parent Meetup for the parents' own call. Teen Learner is a role for older students who take part directly; they see the classes and the resources but not the hidden PARENT EDUCATORS room, where #educator-planning, #lesson-swap and #co-op-logs live.

When to use it

Six families run a co-op over a group chat, and the field trip, the Thursday class location, a science worksheet and a question about a teenager's reading list have all been sent in the same thread this morning. This layout separates the notices from the chat, sorts resources by the age they suit, gives outings their own planning and sign-up channels, and adds a room for the parents who teach to plan away from the families.

What makes it different

Resources are split into four age bands, so a parent finds what suits their child without scrolling.
#trip-signups and #field-trip-planning keep outings out of #family-chat where the headcount gets lost.
#this-weeks-schedule is read-only, so the class location for Thursday is always the last message.
Teen Learner is a role for older students who join directly but cannot see the parent-educators room.
Co-op Class and Parent Meetup are separate voice rooms, so a lesson and a parents' call never collide.

Questions

Do children need their own accounts?

Only older students who take part directly, and they must meet Discord's minimum age. They get the Teen Learner role, which shows the classes, the resources and the outings and hides the parent-educators room. Younger children are represented by their parents.

Who can post in #co-op-notices and the schedule?

The Co-op Coordinator and the Parent Educators. Everyone else reads. Questions about a notice go in #family-chat so the board stays a clean list.

What is #lesson-swap for?

Parent educators offering to trade a class: I will take your maths Thursday if you take my art next week. It is in the hidden room so the swap is agreed before the schedule changes.

Common mistakes

Keeping all resources in one channel, so the same worksheet gets asked for and re-posted every term.
Letting teen learners into the parent-educators room, where parents discuss how a child is doing.

Consider instead
