Makerspace Community
A channel per tool room where only certified members book, a safety category, a projects forum and open hours.
- 7 categories
- 35 channels
- 14 roles
- Medium
Choose a server, review what will be created or reused, then confirm. Merge keeps what you have; replace rebuilds the server. Vetox takes a safety backup first either way.

Overview
A server for a community makerspace or hackerspace run by a shop manager, a safety officer and volunteer tool stewards. The layout follows the floor plan. TOOL ROOMS has a channel per area (#3d-printing, #laser-cutting, #woodshop, #electronics-bench, #cnc-and-metal, #textiles-and-sewing) that anyone can read but only members holding that area's certification role can post in, so a booking or a "the nozzle is clogged" report always comes from someone who has been inducted. #tool-booking is slowmoded and sits alongside them. SAFETY is its own category: #safety-notices is posted by the Safety Officer only, #near-misses-and-incidents is where members report without blame, #ppe-and-first-aid is read-only and #certification-requests is a read-only channel with a form for booking an induction. PROJECTS is a forum with tags for in progress, finished, help wanted and failed, backed by #project-help, #show-and-tell, #materials-and-scraps for the free bin and #group-builds. #open-hours is the announcement channel: who is opening the space and when, posted by the team only. Stewards get a hidden room with a #maintenance-log, #consumables-orders and the #induction-queue. Six certification roles map one-to-one onto the tool rooms, which is what makes the permission layout work.
When to use it
Someone booked the laser without ever having been inducted, the safety notice about the table saw got lost under photos of a finished chair, and the 3D printer has been broken for a week because nobody knew who to tell. This layout makes each tool room postable only by certified members, gives safety its own read-only feed and an incident channel, and gives projects a forum so a build's thread outlives the build.
What makes it different
- Each tool room channel is readable by all but postable only by members certified on that tool.
- Safety notices are posted by the Safety Officer only, with a separate blameless channel for near misses.
- Certification is a form in a read-only channel, reviewed in a hidden induction queue.
- Projects is a forum with in progress, finished, help wanted and failed tags, so builds keep a thread.
- Open hours is the announcement channel, so members always know who is opening the space.
Recommended Vetox setup
Applications
Take induction bookings through #certification-requests and grant the matching certification role, such as Laser Certified, from the submission in #induction-queue.
Reminders
Schedule Reminders in #open-hours for the week's opening slots and in #maintenance-log for the monthly filter and blade checks.
Tickets
Put a Tickets panel in #near-misses-and-incidents so a member can report an injury or a damaged machine to the Safety Officer in private.
Starboard
Run a Starboard from #show-and-tell so the builds members react to most form a permanent gallery.
Logs
Send message logs to #makerspace-logs so a deleted safety report or a changed booking is traceable.
Questions
How do the certification roles work with the tool channels?
Every tool room channel denies posting to everyone and allows it for the matching role: 3D Print Certified posts in #3d-printing, Laser Certified in #laser-cutting, and so on. Anyone can read them, so a new member can see how the room is used before their induction.
We have tools that are not in the list. What do I add?
Add a certification role and a channel, then copy the overwrites from an existing tool room: everyone read-only, the new role allowed to post, stewards allowed to post. Mention the new role in #certification-requests.
Why is #near-misses-and-incidents open to everyone rather than staff only?
Near misses only get reported if reporting is easy and blameless. Members post what nearly happened, the Safety Officer follows up privately if needed. Injuries and anything sensitive go through a ticket instead.
Common mistakes
- Letting everyone post in every tool room, which means bookings and breakage reports come from people who have never used the machine.
- Mixing safety notices into the general chat until a member misses the one about the damaged blade.
Consider instead
- Coworking Space Community Your space is desks and meeting rooms rather than machines that need certification.
