Overview

Built for a city-wide community run by a few volunteers who want the server to read like the city's week rather than one endless feed. The top of the server is the week: #local-news carries what happened, #events-this-week is a read-only listing that only Event Hosts and the council post to, and #meetup-signups and #meetup-chat separate "I am coming" from "where do we meet". Recommendations are split by kind (#food-and-drink, #services-and-tradespeople, #housing-and-rentals, #doctors-and-dentists) and #best-of-the-city is a forum where the settled answers live as threads instead of being asked again every month. The marketplace (#for-sale, #wanted, #free-stuff, #jobs-board) is visible only to Verified Residents and every listing channel is slowmoded, which is what keeps it free of drive-by scam listings. Seven districts are self-assigned roles, and each district channel is visible only to the people who picked it, so #old-town stays a neighbourhood room rather than a city-wide channel. Local Business is a role that may post in #business-directory and #local-business-promo and has no extra reach anywhere else. Staff get a hidden mod room, a verification queue and a log channel.

When to use it

Your city has a subreddit and three social media groups, and all of them are the same argument about parking. You want a place where someone can ask for a dentist and get an answer that lasts, see what is on this weekend without scrolling, and sell a bike to a neighbour without a stranger sending them a fake payment link. This layout gives each of those its own channel, gates the marketplace behind resident verification and keeps district chatter inside the district.

What makes it different

  • Events This Week is read-only: Event Hosts and the council post, everyone else reads a clean listing.
  • Recommendations are split by kind, with a forum for the answers worth keeping.
  • The marketplace is hidden until a member is a Verified Resident, and every listing channel is slowmoded.
  • District channels are visible only to members who picked that district role.
  • Local Business is a role that may post in the directory and the promo channel, and nowhere else.

Recommended Vetox setup

  • Self-Roles

Post a Self-Roles panel in #pick-your-district for the seven district roles so each district channel fills with the right people.

  • Applications

Take a short residency form in #resident-verification and grant Verified Resident from the submission, which is what unlocks the marketplace.

  • Reminders

Schedule a Reminder in #events-this-week every Monday morning so the week's listing is posted before anyone asks for it.

  • Auto-Mod

Enable Auto-Mod link and invite rules on #for-sale, #wanted and #free-stuff, where scam listings and fake payment links show up first.

  • Suggestions

Point Suggestions at #event-ideas so meetup proposals collect votes instead of vanishing under the chat.

Questions

How do I keep #local-news from turning into arguments?

It has a thirty-second slowmode, and #council-and-politics is a separate channel with its own slowmode, so news stays news and the argument happens in the room built for it. Moderators can point people to the second channel instead of deleting posts.

Why can a Moderator not post in #city-announcements?

Announcements reach every member's notifications, and a compromised moderator account is the fastest way for a scam link to reach all of them. Only City Council and Admin can post there; moderators post in #local-news like everyone else.

Can I use fewer districts?

Yes. Delete the district roles and channels you do not need; each role and channel pair is independent of the others. Three or four districts is plenty for a small city, and you can add one later with a role and a channel.

What happens to members who never verify?

They can use everything except the marketplace and the business owners lounge. Verification exists to protect the trade channels, not to keep people out of the conversation.

Common mistakes

  • Making the marketplace public on day one; it becomes the scam channel within a week, and the verification gate is much harder to add after the fact.
  • Creating a channel per district and leaving all of them visible to everyone, which turns seven neighbourhood rooms into seven copies of #city-chat.
