Neighbourhood Community
Street notices, lost and found, a watch channel, mutual aid and a block party category for one neighbourhood.
- 9 categories
- 37 channels
- 9 roles
- Medium
Choose a server, review what will be created or reused, then confirm. Merge keeps what you have; replace rebuilds the server. Vetox takes a safety backup first either way.

Channels
FRONT PORCH
- welcome-neighbour
You found the block. Read #house-rules, then verify in #get-verified to see the safety and mutual aid channels.
- house-rules
Neighbours first. No naming people in #suspicious-activity, no selling on behalf of strangers, no politics.
- notice-board
Block-wide notices from the committee: meetings, street closures, the annual party.
- get-verified
Tell the committee which street you are on to become a Verified Neighbour.
NOTICES
- street-notices
Roadworks, power cuts, water off, scaffolding going up. Anyone can post what they have seen.
- bin-and-recycling
Collection days, missed collections and what goes in which bin.
- roadworks-and-parking
Closures, permit changes, the van that has been parked there for three weeks.
- council-notices
Official notices copied in by the committee: planning applications, consultations, deadlines.
LOST AND FOUND
- lost-and-found
Keys, bikes, glasses, a single glove. Photo and where you last saw it.
- lost-pets
Missing or found animals. Post a photo, the street and a way to reach you. Update when reunited.
- package-mixups
Parcels delivered to the wrong door. Say the name on the label and which house has it.
SAFETY
- safety-alertsHidden from @everyone
Confirmed alerts from Watch Coordinators: a break-in, a scam doing the rounds, a hazard. Read-only for everyone else.
- suspicious-activity30s slowmode
Something looked wrong. Describe what and where, never who. Coordinators decide if it becomes an alert.
- neighbourhood-watch
Ongoing watch talk: patterns, cameras, what the police liaison said.
- emergency-contactsHidden from @everyone
Non-emergency police, the water company, the gas leak line, the coordinators' numbers.
MUTUAL AID
- need-a-hand
Ask for help: a lift to the hospital, a prescription picked up, a ladder held. Say when.
- can-offer
What you can do and when: driving, cooking, dog walking, a spare room for a night.
- tool-library
Who has the drill, the ladder, the pressure washer. Borrow it, return it clean.
- meal-train
Someone is ill or has a newborn. Claim a day, drop the food on the step.
MARKETPLACE
- buy-and-sell60s slowmode
One item per message with a price and a photo. Meet at the door, pay in person.
- curb-alerts30s slowmode
Free stuff left out on the pavement. Say which house and post when it is gone.
- garage-sales60s slowmode
Upcoming sales on the block with a date, a time and a house number.
- borrow-and-lend
Not tools: a suitcase, a folding table, extra chairs for a party.
BLOCK LIFE
- block-chat
The everyday room. Weather, noise, the fox that keeps coming back.
- block-events
Coffee mornings, clean-up days, the summer fair. Date, time, place.
- block-party-planning
Who brings what, who closes the road, who plays the music too loud.
- gardens-and-allotments
Seedlings to spare, slug wars, the allotment waiting list.
- pets-on-the-block
Introduce your animal, find a walker, share a good vet.
- who-do-you-recommend
A plumber, a cleaner, a roofer. Only people you have paid yourself.
- new-on-the-block
Just moved in? Say hello and which street. Neighbours will tell you the bin day.
VOICE
- Porch Voice
- Block Meeting
- AFK
COMMITTEE
- committee-room
Committee business: budgets, disputes, who is doing what before the next meeting.
- verification-requests
Residency forms land here. Approve, or ask which street if it is unclear.
- watch-coordinatorsHidden from @everyone
Coordinators and committee only: what becomes an alert, what stays a sighting.
- block-logsHidden from @everyone
Vetox posts join, message and moderation logs here.

Overview
A server for one neighbourhood, a few streets or an estate, run by a block captain and a small committee. It is organised by what neighbours actually message each other about. NOTICES holds #street-notices for roadworks and power cuts, #bin-and-recycling for the collection calendar and #council-notices, which only the committee posts to. LOST AND FOUND has #lost-and-found, #lost-pets and #package-mixups for the parcel that went to number 12 instead of 21. SAFETY is visible only to Verified Neighbours: #safety-alerts is posted by Watch Coordinators, #suspicious-activity is slowmoded so one sighting does not become a thread of fifty, and #emergency-contacts is read-only. MUTUAL AID pairs #need-a-hand with #can-offer, plus a #tool-library and a #meal-train for when someone is ill or has a new baby. The marketplace (#buy-and-sell, #curb-alerts, #garage-sales, #borrow-and-lend) is also verified-only and slowmoded. BLOCK LIFE carries the chat, #block-events, #block-party-planning, gardens and pets. Verification is a short form; until then a newcomer can read the notices and the lost-and-found channels and post in #block-chat, which is enough to be useful without opening the safety channel to strangers.
When to use it
The neighbourhood group chat has two hundred unread messages, half of them about a lost cat that was found on Tuesday, and the one message about the burst water main scrolled past everyone. This layout gives notices, lost and found, safety, mutual aid and the block party their own rooms, gates the safety and trade channels behind a quick residency check, and leaves the committee a private room for the things that should not be public.
What makes it different
- Safety channels are hidden until a member is a Verified Neighbour, and alerts are posted only by Watch Coordinators.
- Lost and found is three channels: items, pets and misdelivered parcels, so nothing gets buried.
- Mutual aid pairs a need channel with an offer channel, plus a tool library and a meal train.
- The marketplace is verified-only and slowmoded, with a curb alerts channel for free stuff on the pavement.
- The committee room, the verification requests and the watch coordinators channel are hidden from members.
Recommended Vetox setup
Applications
Take a two-question residency form in #get-verified and grant Verified Neighbour from the submission, which opens SAFETY and MUTUAL AID.
Reminders
Schedule a Reminder in #bin-and-recycling the evening before collection day; it is the single most appreciated message a block server sends.
Auto-Mod
Enable Auto-Mod invite and link rules on #buy-and-sell and #curb-alerts so a scam listing is removed before a neighbour replies to it.
Logs
Send message and member logs to #block-logs so the committee can see who deleted a safety report and when.
Questions
Who can post in #safety-alerts?
Only Watch Coordinators, the committee and admins. Everyone verified can read it and can post a sighting in #suspicious-activity, which has a slowmode. Coordinators promote a sighting to an alert when it warrants one.
What can an unverified newcomer see?
The front porch, the notices, lost and found and the block chat. The safety category, mutual aid and the marketplace stay hidden until the committee confirms they live on the block.
Do I need the mutual aid category if we are a small block?
Keep at least #need-a-hand and #can-offer; they are the channels people remember the server for when someone is ill. The tool library and meal train can be deleted if nobody uses them after a few months.
Common mistakes
- Leaving #suspicious-activity open to everyone with no slowmode, which turns one sighting into panic and gives outsiders a live feed of who is away.
- Using #safety-alerts for everything from parking to parcel theft until nobody reads it; keep it for Watch Coordinators and real alerts.
Consider instead
- City Community Server You are covering a whole city with districts rather than one neighbourhood.
- Mutual Aid Network Mutual aid is the whole point and you need coordinators, case privacy and a volunteer tier.
