Overview

A language school where students are placed by level and only see their own class. Five hidden categories, LEVEL A1 through LEVEL C1, each hold a text classroom, a homework drop and a class voice room, and each is opened by its own role, so an A2 Student sees #a2-classroom and the A2 Class room and nothing of B2. The homework drops accept written and voice-message homework that only teachers can read, which matters when the homework is a spoken recording nobody wants their classmates to hear. What every level shares is CONVERSATION PRACTICE: #conversation-topics and #vocabulary-of-the-day are read-only prompts from teachers and volunteers, #grammar-questions is open to everyone, and the voice rooms are grouped by band rather than by class, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Conversation, plus a four-seat Pronunciation Booth for drilling sounds with a volunteer. RECEPTION holds #school-notices, #placement-and-levels for how a new student gets their level, #class-timetable and the school guidelines. The STUDENT CAFE is a target-language-only chat with #media-recommendations for films and podcasts. Teachers have a hidden FACULTY ROOM with #lesson-materials, #level-promotions for deciding who moves up, and a Faculty Meeting voice room.

When to use it

Your school teaches five levels and one Discord channel per level was not enough: beginners were reading C1 homework threads, conversation practice happened in whichever room was open, and the teachers had nowhere to discuss who should move up. This layout hides each level behind its role, gives every level the same classroom, homework drop and voice room, and pools conversation practice by band so an A1 student is never dropped into an advanced debate.

What makes it different

  • Each level is a hidden category with a classroom, a homework drop and a class voice room, opened by one role.
  • Homework drops accept voice messages that only teachers can read, so spoken homework is not public.
  • Conversation voice rooms are grouped by band, so a beginner is never placed in an advanced discussion.
  • #level-promotions in the faculty room is where teachers decide who moves up, away from the students.
  • Conversation Volunteer is a role for native speakers who post prompts and run the Pronunciation Booth.

Recommended Vetox setup

  • Applications

Use an Applications form linked from #placement-and-levels for the placement questionnaire, so a teacher assigns the level role from the answers.

  • Streaks

Turn on Streaks for #vocabulary-of-the-day replies so daily practice builds a visible run students will not want to break.

  • Reminders

Schedule Reminders in each #-classroom the evening before homework is due and in #class-timetable before each live class.

  • Auto-Mod

Set Auto-Mod on #cafe-chat to keep the target-language-only rule and the tone without a teacher watching all day.

Questions

How does a student move from A2 to B1?

A teacher decides in #level-promotions, removes A2 Student and adds B1 Student. The A2 category disappears for that student and the B1 one appears, homework drop included. Do it at the end of a term so the student is not left with half a homework thread in each.

Can students record spoken homework?

Yes. The homework drops allow voice messages and attachments for the level's students and deny reading the history, so a student records their answer and only the teachers hear it.

What are the conversation bands?

Beginner Conversation is meant for A1 and A2, Intermediate for B1 and B2, Advanced for C1. The rooms are open to everyone so a confident A2 student can try the intermediate room, but the names set the expectation.

Common mistakes

  • Giving a student two level roles while they transition, which shows them two classrooms and two homework sets at once.
  • Running all conversation practice in one room, so the beginners go silent and the advanced students do all the talking.
