Overview
A community whose members do not all share a first language, laid out so nobody has to scroll past channels they cannot read. Entrance holds #welcome-all, #rules-all-languages, an announcement channel, #language-roles and #how-it-works. Common Ground is the shared floor where English is the bridge: #common-room, #say-hello, #translation-help for 'how do I say this', #language-exchange for pairing up and a staff-written #word-of-the-day. Then six language sections - English, Español, Français, Deutsch, Português and 日本語 - each hidden until a member picks that language role in #language-roles, each with a chat channel and a learners channel where mistakes are expected. A member who speaks two languages picks two roles and sees two sections; everyone else sees a short sidebar. Shared Events keeps the community one place: a read-only #event-calendar, #language-cafe-signups, #film-night-votes and an Event Stage. Voice is a mixed Language Café plus one table per language, all open so a learner can listen before speaking, and AFK. Section Leads moderate their own language with Helper permissions and share #section-leads with the Moderators; the staff area also has #mod-chat, #vetox-logs and a voice room. Fourteen roles include Polyglot, a Leveling reward for people who show up across sections.
When to use it
Half your members skim past channels they cannot read, a Spanish thread in the English channel gets told off, and moderators who speak one language cannot judge a report written in another. This layout gives each language a section that only its speakers see, a shared floor with translation help so the community does not split into six servers, and Section Leads who moderate in their own language.
What makes it different
- Six language sections are hidden until a member picks that language role, so sidebars stay short.
- #translation-help and #language-exchange sit on the shared floor, keeping the community in one place.
- Each section pairs a chat channel with a learners channel where corrections are welcome.
- Section Leads moderate their own language and share #section-leads with the Moderators.
- Voice tables are open to everyone, so a learner can listen to Spanish before joining the Spanish section.
Recommended Vetox setup
Self-Roles
Post a Self-Roles panel in #language-roles with English, Español, Français, Deutsch, Português and 日本語; each role unlocks its section.
Welcomer
Point Welcomer at #welcome-all with a short greeting in every section language, ending with a nudge to #language-roles.
Reminders
Schedule a Reminder in #word-of-the-day each morning and one in #language-cafe-signups the day before each café.
Leveling
Award Polyglot as a Leveling role reward so the people active across several sections get a visible tier.
Logs
Send Logs to #vetox-logs; a Section Lead reading a deleted message in their own language is how most cross-language reports get settled.
Questions
What if my community's languages are different from the six here?
Rename the sections, roles and voice tables; the pattern is what matters. Keep one chat plus one learners channel per language and keep the section hidden behind its role. Add a section only when you have a Section Lead who reads that language.
Why is English the language of the shared floor?
The shared floor needs one bridge language so that #translation-help and #common-room work for everyone, and English is the most common second language in most international groups. If your community's bridge is Spanish or French, say so in #how-it-works and swap the English section for a different one.
Can someone pick more than one language role?
Yes, and that is the point of self-assignment. A bilingual member picks two roles and sees two sections. Nobody has to choose a single identity, and the learners channels are for exactly the people who are between languages.
Common mistakes
- Making every language section visible to everyone, which brings back the wall of unreadable channels the layout exists to remove.
- Appointing Section Leads who do not read the language they moderate, so reports in that section wait days for someone who can judge them.
- Letting the shared floor drift into English-only banter until the other sections feel like annexes rather than the same community.
Consider instead
- Topic-Split Community when the community shares one working language and the split it needs is by subject, not by tongue
