Server structure

Overview

A classroom-shaped server for people learning music, run by a few tutors and a lot of students. Theory lives in the #theory-questions forum, where every question is a thread tagged by topic and level - harmony, rhythm, notation, counterpoint, analysis, beginner or advanced - so the same question gets one good answer instead of ten partial ones; #harmony-and-chords, #rhythm-and-meter and #notation-and-sight-reading are for the ongoing conversations, and #analysis-of-the-week is a piece a tutor posts for everyone to pull apart. Instruments each get a room: #piano-and-keys, #guitar-and-bass, #voice-and-singing, #strings, #winds-and-brass and #drums-and-percussion. Practice is treated as the real work: #practice-logs is a forum with one thread per student, #practice-recordings takes clips for feedback, #technique-help and #goals-and-milestones cover the rest. Ear training happens in voice - Ear Training Room and Sight Reading Room, with #ear-training-chat for answers - because you cannot do interval drills in text. The library holds #resources-and-books, #free-sheet-music, #apps-and-tools and a read-only #lesson-recordings. Tutors hold Office Hours on a stage and have a hidden faculty room.

When to use it

Your music-learning group has beginners asking what a seventh chord is in the same channel where two advanced members argue about voice leading, and nobody logs their practice because there is nowhere to. This layout tags questions by level, gives every instrument a room, turns practice into a per-student thread, and moves ear training into voice rooms where it can actually be done.

What makes it different

• Self-Roles

  Post a Self-Roles panel in #choose-instrument-and-level for the six instrument roles and Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced, so a question can be answered at the right level.

• Streaks

  Turn on Streaks so a student who posts in #practice-logs every day builds a visible streak; it is the cheapest motivation the server can offer.

• Reminders

  Schedule a Reminder in #analysis-of-the-week every Monday prompting the Tutor on duty to post the week's piece.

• Applications

  Use Applications for the Tutor role so a volunteer answers a few questions about what they teach, and the answers land in #tutor-room for review.
