Overview

A server for parents and carers in one town or district, run by a couple of organisers. Almost everything sits behind a Verified Parent role, because a channel saying where children will be on Saturday cannot be readable by anyone with the invite link. WELCOME is read-only and holds #welcome-families, #family-rules, #parent-verification, #family-announcements and #age-group-roles. PLAYDATES has #playdate-requests, #park-meetups, #rainy-day-plans and #birthday-parties. SCHOOLS AND CHILDCARE is why many people join: #schools-and-admissions, #nurseries-and-daycare, a slowmoded #babysitters-and-nannies board, #after-school-clubs, #tutors-and-lessons and #school-holidays. AGE GROUPS gives each stage a room visible only to parents holding that role (#expecting-parents, #babies-and-toddlers, #preschool-parents, #primary-school-parents, #parents-of-teens), because sleep regression advice and exam stress advice should not share a channel. KIDS GEAR is a slowmoded marketplace: #gear-for-sale, #gear-wanted, #outgrown-and-free and #gear-swap-events. FAMILY EVENTS carries a read-only #family-events-calendar posted by organisers, #event-rsvp, #weekend-ideas and #holiday-camps. PARENT TALK is the everyday chat plus #sleep-and-feeding, #health-and-doctors, #recipes-and-lunchboxes and #parent-wins-and-vent. Organisers get a hidden room, a verification queue and a safeguarding channel.

When to use it

The parents' group is on a public platform where anyone can read which park the toddlers will be in on Saturday, the babysitter recommendations are mixed with the pushchair for sale, and the one message about a school admissions deadline was missed. This layout gates everything personal behind parent verification, splits schools and childcare into searchable channels, gives each age group its own room, and makes the events calendar a read-only feed from the organisers.

What makes it different

  • Playdates, childcare, age groups, the marketplace and events are all hidden until a member is a Verified Parent.
  • Each age group has a room visible only to parents who picked that role.
  • The babysitter board and the kids gear marketplace are slowmoded and verified-only.
  • The family events calendar is posted by organisers only, with a separate RSVP channel.
  • Organisers have a hidden safeguarding channel for anything that should never be public.

Recommended Vetox setup

  • Applications

Take a short verification form in #parent-verification and grant Verified Parent from #verification-review; it is the gate for the whole server.

  • Self-Roles

Post a Self-Roles panel in #age-group-roles for Expecting, Babies and Toddlers, Preschool, Primary School and Teens so the age rooms fill themselves.

  • Auto-Mod

Enable Auto-Mod link and invite rules on #babysitters-and-nannies, #gear-for-sale and #gear-wanted, the channels a scammer will try first.

  • Reminders

Schedule Reminders in #school-holidays for term dates and in #family-events-calendar the morning before each event.

  • Tickets

Put a Tickets panel in #welcome-families so a parent can raise a concern about another member privately with the organisers.

Questions

What can a member see before they are verified?

The welcome category and #parent-chat, which is enough to ask what the group is and how verification works. Playdates, childcare, the age rooms, the marketplace and events stay hidden until an organiser grants Verified Parent.

How strict should verification be?

As strict as your group is comfortable with. Many groups ask for a first name, the area you live in and a sentence about your children, then have an existing member vouch. The form is yours to write; the template only supplies the gate.

Can a parent be in more than one age group?

Yes. The roles are self-assigned and independent, so a parent with a toddler and a teenager picks both and sees both rooms.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving playdates and park meetups readable by unverified members, which publishes where children will be to anyone with the link.
  • One channel for all ages, where the newborn questions and the teenager questions drown each other out within a week.
