Overview
A server for people who have just moved to a city or country and the settled members who help them. It is organised by the order things happen to a newcomer. ARRIVALS is read-only: #start-here-newcomers, #newcomer-rules, #where-are-you-from for the region roles, #newcomer-announcements and a #first-week-checklist. SETTLING IN has #arriving-soon for people still packing, #just-arrived, #culture-shock and #settling-in-tips. PAPERWORK is the category people join for: #paperwork-help, #visas-and-permits, #banking-and-taxes, #healthcare-registration and #driving-licence, each a searchable record of how the last hundred people did it. HOUSING covers #housing-search, #neighbourhood-advice, #landlord-and-lease-questions and two slowmoded boards, #flatmates-wanted and #furniture-and-move-out-sales. LANGUAGE HELP has #language-help, #language-exchange-partners and #classes-and-tutors. MEETUPS carries a read-only #this-months-meetups posted by Local Guides, #meetup-rsvp, #weekend-explorers, #sports-and-hobby-groups and a #food-tour-crew. Six region roles (From the Americas, From Europe, From Africa, From Asia, From the Middle East, From Oceania) each unlock a corner channel visible only to people from that region, where the questions are about home rather than here. Local Guides are settled members who answer and host; the guides' room and the verification of the Settled role are hidden.
When to use it
The same three questions about residence permits get asked every day, a scammer posts a flat that does not exist, and the meetup thread is ninety messages of "is this still on". This layout keeps paperwork answers in channels named for the problem, slowmodes the housing boards where scams land, makes the meetup listing a read-only feed from the guides, and gives every region a corner of its own.
What makes it different
- Paperwork is split by problem, so the permit answer is a search away instead of a daily question.
- The flatmates and move-out sale boards are slowmoded, which is where housing scams land first.
- The monthly meetup listing is posted by Local Guides only; RSVP is a separate channel.
- Six region corners are visible only to members who picked that region role.
- Arriving Soon and Just Arrived are separate channels, so the packing questions do not drown the settling ones.
Recommended Vetox setup
Self-Roles
Post a Self-Roles panel in #where-are-you-from for the six region roles and for Arriving Soon, Newcomer and Settled.
Auto-Mod
Enable Auto-Mod link and invite rules on #flatmates-wanted, #furniture-and-move-out-sales and #housing-search, where fake listings are posted first.
Welcomer
Set a Welcomer message pointing new arrivals at #first-week-checklist and #paperwork-help, the two channels they will need first.
Reminders
Schedule a Reminder in #this-months-meetups on the first of the month asking Local Guides to post the listing.
Streaks
Run Streaks on #language-help and #phrase-practice so daily practice has a visible streak to protect.
Questions
Who is a Local Guide?
A settled member who volunteers to answer paperwork questions, host a meetup or vet a housing post. Guides can post in #this-months-meetups and see #guides-room. Grant it by hand to people who have earned it; it is not self-assigned.
What is the Settled role for?
It marks members who have been here a year or more, which tells a newcomer whose answer to trust. It is verified in #settled-verification rather than self-assigned, so it means something.
Can I use countries instead of regions for the corners?
Yes. Rename the six region roles and channels to the countries your members actually come from and keep the overwrites: hidden from everyone, visible to that role and to Moderator.
Common mistakes
- One channel for all housing, which means the scam listing sits next to the honest one and the flatmate request scrolls away in an hour.
- Letting anyone post meetups in the listing; guides post, everyone RSVPs, and the listing stays readable.
Consider instead
- City Community Server Most of your members are locals rather than people who just arrived.
