How we treat each other: listen first, no diagnosing, no comparing, no screenshots leaving the server.

Overview

A community where people look after each other without pretending to be professionals. The first thing a newcomer reads, after #welcome-in and #community-agreements, is #not-a-crisis-line: a read-only channel that says plainly that this server is peer support, not therapy, and lists where to go in an emergency. Check-Ins is the daily rhythm: #daily-check-in with a slowmode so each post stands on its own, #small-wins, #three-good-things and #sleep-and-routine. Venting is deliberately fenced: #vent-space has a two-minute slowmode and its rules pinned in #vent-rules - no advice unless asked, no comparing, no diagnosing - and #ask-a-peer-supporter is where a member can call for a trained volunteer. A Quiet Mode role hides the whole Venting category from anyone who takes it, so a member having a hard week can opt out of other people's without leaving. Resources is read-only and staff-written: helplines by country, reading and podcasts, and a coping toolbox, with an open #resource-suggestions beside them. Distraction is six hobby channels - creative, pets, games, cooking, movement and music - because sometimes the help is a change of subject. Voice has Quiet Company for sitting together on mute, Body Doubling for getting things done, Game Night and Stretch and Walk. Peer Supporters are ordinary members with a hoisted role and no moderation powers.

When to use it

Your members support each other well but the venting spills into every channel, a few people carry everyone else's weight, and nobody has written down that this is not a crisis service. This layout puts the disclaimer first, gives venting a fenced space with rules and an opt-out, gives supporters a private place to hand over and escalate, and keeps six hobby channels open for the days when a distraction is the help.

What makes it different

  • #not-a-crisis-line is the third channel a newcomer sees and states what the server is not.
  • Quiet Mode is a self-assigned role that hides the entire Venting category from whoever takes it.
  • #vent-space carries a two-minute slowmode and pinned rules: no advice unless asked, no comparing.
  • Peer Supporters are mentionable and hoisted but have no moderation powers.
  • #handover-notes and #safety-escalations keep ongoing concerns from being lost between volunteers.

Recommended Vetox setup

  • Self-Roles

Post a Self-Roles panel in #choose-your-roles with Check-In Ping and Quiet Mode, so opting out of Venting is one click and needs no explanation.

  • Reminders

Schedule a Reminder in #daily-check-in each morning and one in #three-good-things each evening, mentioning Check-In Ping.

  • Streaks

Turn on Streaks for #daily-check-in so showing up every day is noticed without anyone having to keep score.

  • Auto-Mod

Set Auto-Mod to hold messages with crisis keywords in #vent-space for review, and route the alert to #safety-escalations for Peer Supporters and Moderators.

  • Logs

Send Logs to #vetox-logs so a Moderator handling an escalation can read what was deleted and by whom.

Questions

Is this a mental health server?

It is a peer-support community, and the template says so in its third channel. Nobody here is a professional, nothing here is treatment, and #not-a-crisis-line lists where to go when someone needs more than a listening ear. Keep that channel; it protects your members and your volunteers.

What does the Quiet Mode role actually do?

It denies view permission on the Venting category for whoever holds it. A member who is not up to reading other people's hard days takes the role in #choose-your-roles, the category disappears for them, and they drop it whenever they are ready. Nobody else knows.

What is Body Doubling voice for?

Sitting in a voice channel with other people while you each do your own task - laundry, an essay, a form you have been avoiding. Cameras and microphones are optional. It is one of the most useful things a wellness server can offer and costs nothing.

How do Peer Supporters get chosen?

By the Moderators, after someone has been a steady, kind presence for a while. The role gives no powers, only a badge and a mention. Rotate people out when they need a break; #handover-notes exists so nothing is lost when they do.

Common mistakes

  • Letting Peer Supporters give advice in #vent-space instead of listening, which is the one rule the channel exists to enforce.
  • Making #vent-space the busiest channel by neglecting the Distraction category, so the server becomes a place people visit only when things are bad.
  • Skipping #not-a-crisis-line because it feels cold, which leaves the volunteers holding a responsibility they never agreed to.
