Server structure

Overview

Every general server dies at 2am and the people awake then are the ones who most want company. This one is built for that window. #whos-up is the channel the whole server turns on: post that you are awake and roughly what you are doing, and it becomes the place someone checks before deciding whether tonight is worth staying up for. Roles are timezone-based rather than decorative — Americas Night, Europe Night and Asia Night — so the server always has a shift rather than one dead period, and a ping reaches the people who are actually awake. The Rooms are named for what the hour is for: Night Shift is for people working through it, Winding Down is for the hour before sleep and has an explicit expectation that conversation stays quiet, and Cannot Sleep is the one nobody wants to need and everybody uses eventually. Text keeps #night-thoughts with a slowmode, because 3am conversation benefits from a pause, #snacks-and-coffee, #whats-keeping-you-up and #sunrise for the people who made it through. Daylight is a small category for the daytime conversation that still needs somewhere to go. Care matters at these hours: #looking-out-for-each-other states plainly that this is a lounge and not a crisis service, and lists where to go instead, which is the responsible thing for a server that will occasionally have someone in a bad state at 4am.

When to use it

General servers are dead in the small hours, so the people awake then have nowhere with any life in it, and the ones who are awake because something is wrong have nowhere at all. This layout organises around the night: a channel showing who is up, timezone roles so there is always a shift, and rooms named for what the hour is actually for, with a clear statement of what the server is not.

  Post a Self-Roles panel in #your-timezone so a late-night ping reaches the shift that is actually awake.

  Enable Temp Voice so a busy night opens another room and a dead one leaves no empty channels behind.

  Run Auto-Mod, since the small hours are when a server has the fewest moderators awake to catch anything.
