Channels

THE FLAT

  • flat-chat

The everyday chat. Take the Guests Over or Away role here when it applies.

  • house-rules-and-quiet-hours

The rules everyone agreed to, quiet hours and bin day. Written by the lease holders.

  • guests-and-quiet-hours

Friends over Friday? Early start Monday? Say it here a day ahead.

  • whos-home

Back at nine. Out all weekend. Do not lock the chain.

MONEY

  • bills-and-rent

Rent, utilities and internet: the split, the due date and who has paid.

  • split-costs

Shared shopping and the takeaway someone covered. One claim per message; settle in a thread.

  • receipts-drop

Photos of receipts for anything claimed in #split-costs.

CHORES AND SUPPLIES

  • chores-rota

Who does what this week. Vetox mentions On Chore Duty on Sunday.

Overview

Thirteen channels for people who share a lease and would rather not argue about the dishwasher in a group chat. The Flat is #flat-chat for the everyday, a read-only #house-rules-and-quiet-hours that the lease holders write once, #guests-and-quiet-hours for the heads-up that someone has friends over on Friday or an early start on Monday, and #whos-home for 'back at nine, do not lock the chain'. Money is #bills-and-rent for the monthly split and the due dates, #split-costs for the shared shopping and the takeaway someone paid for, and #receipts-drop so the photo of the receipt lives next to the claim. Chores and Supplies is #chores-rota, which Vetox reminds On Chore Duty about each week, #groceries-list, #supplies-running-low for the toilet paper and the washing-up liquid before they run out rather than after, and #maintenance-and-repairs for the broken boiler and what the landlord said. Voice is Living Room for a call from the other room and Kitchen Radio for music while someone cooks. Six roles: Owner and Admin are the lease holders, Roommate is everyone, On Chore Duty rotates and is mentionable, Guests Over is a self-set flag that says 'keep it down tonight', and Away means out of town, so nobody buys milk for four when two are home.

When to use it

The rent reminder, the chores argument, 'we are out of milk' and 'I have people over Friday' all live in the same chat and the important ones get missed. This layout gives money, chores and notices their own channels, keeps the house rules pinned and read-only, and adds three roles that say who is on chores, who has guests and who is away, so nobody needs to ask.

What makes it different

  • #house-rules-and-quiet-hours is read-only and written by the lease holders, so the rules are never up for debate.
  • On Chore Duty is a rotating, mentionable role, so the weekly reminder reaches the right person.
  • Guests Over and Away are self-set roles that replace the 'anyone home tonight' message.
  • #receipts-drop sits next to #split-costs, so the photo of the receipt lives beside the claim.
  • #supplies-running-low exists so things get bought before they run out, not after.

Recommended Vetox setup

  • Reminders

Set a Reminder in #bills-and-rent three days before rent is due and one in #chores-rota every Sunday mentioning On Chore Duty.

  • Self-Roles

Post a Self-Roles panel in #flat-chat for Guests Over and Away, so flagging a busy Friday or a week away is one click.

  • Embed Messages

Use Embed Messages for #house-rules-and-quiet-hours so the rules, the quiet hours and the bin day are one clean pinned message.

  • Counting

Run Counting in #flat-chat for the running tally of who has emptied the dishwasher; the joke keeps the rota honest.

Questions

Why are bills and split costs separate channels?

Rent and utilities are the same every month and have due dates; #bills-and-rent is a short, predictable record. Split costs are the irregular stuff, the shared shop and the takeaway, that gets settled whenever. Mixing them means the rent reminder is buried under twelve pizza claims.

What is the Guests Over role for?

It is a flag, not a permission. Someone expecting friends on Friday takes the role in #flat-chat, everyone sees it on the member list, and the heads-up in #guests-and-quiet-hours has a role to mention. Drop it when they leave.

Do we need two voice channels?

Living Room is for a quick call from the other room or from work. Kitchen Radio is for whoever is cooking to play music without taking over the call. If nobody uses the second one, delete it; the layout is meant to be trimmed.

Common mistakes

  • Posting the rent split in #flat-chat, where it scrolls away before the person who owes it looks.
  • Skipping the Away role and buying groceries for the whole house while half of it is on holiday.

Consider instead

  • Family Server when the household is a family with children and grandparents rather than flatmates splitting the rent
