Overview

A peer exchange where everyone is a native speaker of something and a learner of something else, with no teachers and no classes. Matching is a forum: a member opens a thread in #find-a-partner tagged with the language they offer, the language they want and whether they prefer text or voice, and a partner replies. #schedule-a-session and #partner-feedback carry the logistics and the afterwards. The seven LANGUAGE ROOMS, from #english-room to #mandarin-room, have one rule each: write only in that language. CORRECTIONS is where the learning happens in text: post a paragraph in #corrections and a native speaker marks it up, #writing-prompts gives a daily prompt, and #idioms-and-slang and #false-friends collect the things textbooks skip. CULTURE holds #cultural-tips, #recipes-and-travel and #media-swap. Voice is where the exchange actually runs: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Exchange rooms are open, Tandem Booth 1 and 2 are capped at two so a matched pair is never interrupted, and the Listening Lounge denies speaking so a host can play audio or read aloud to a room that only listens. The learning roles, Learning Spanish, Learning Japanese and so on, are self-assigned and mentionable so a native speaker offering a session can ping the right learners. Hosts and helpers have a hidden room with a match queue.

When to use it

Your exchange group is a single chat in six languages where nobody can find a partner, corrections get lost under the next message, and two people trying to practise in voice get joined by a third who only wants to chat. This layout turns matching into a tagged forum, gives every language its own room and corrections their own channel, and adds two-seat tandem booths where a matched pair cannot be interrupted.
