Overview

Made for an author publishing a story chapter by chapter, with readers at every point in it. The problem a serial server has to solve is spoilers: someone on chapter 12 and someone on chapter 140 share the same chat. This layout answers it with a role. CHAPTERS is open to everyone: #chapter-discussion is a forum with a thread per chapter tagged by arc, #spoiler-free-zone is safe for new readers, #reading-progress is where people say how far they are, and #typo-reports feeds the editor. CAUGHT UP is hidden until a reader takes the Caught Up role from #reader-roles; behind it sit #latest-chapter-spoilers, a #theories forum tagged Plot, Character or World, #predictions, #character-debates and a read-only #timeline-and-wiki the editor keeps canonical. THE GALLERY holds #character-art, #scene-illustrations, fancasts and fan fiction. Reader tiers are hidden categories with real content: patron readers get #early-chapters, #deleted-scenes and a #name-a-character channel, beta readers get drafts and a tagged feedback forum before anyone else sees a word. An Author Q&A Stage and a Reading Circle voice room round out the lounge, and THE STUDY is the staff room for release scheduling and spoiler reports.

When to use it

Chapters go up every week, your comment section has a new reader asking who a character is next to a veteran predicting the finale, and one careless reply spoils the twist for both. This layout hides everything past the latest chapter behind a self-assigned Caught Up role, gives each chapter a thread that new readers reach in order, and turns patrons and beta readers into tiers with early chapters and drafts rather than a coloured name.

Questions

What stops a reader taking Caught Up before they are actually caught up?

Nothing, and that is fine. The role is a promise to themselves: whoever takes it accepts spoilers. The point is that nobody else gets spoiled by accident, because everything past the latest chapter is invisible without it.

How do I handle a new arc?

Add an arc tag to #chapter-discussion and #theories, post the arc summary in #timeline-and-wiki, and keep going. Threads for old arcs stay where they are; nothing needs archiving.

What is the difference between Patron Reader and Beta Reader?

Patron Reader is a paid tier that sees chapters early and finished. Beta Reader is hand-picked and sees drafts before they are finished, with a feedback forum the editor reads. A beta reader is usually also a patron, but the roles are separate on purpose.

Do I need the beta reader category if I do not use beta readers?

Delete it. The rest of the layout does not depend on it. Keep the Editor role even if it is only you: it is what posts to the read-only channels.

Common mistakes

Letting spoiler talk happen in #chapter-discussion threads for old chapters, which is exactly where new readers go first.
Giving the Caught Up role by hand, which turns the author into a gatekeeper and leaves readers waiting for hours.

Consider instead
