Overview

A founders circle only works if people say true things, and people only say true things when the room is small, vetted and confidential. Everything here is arranged around that. #the-agreement is read-only and states the one rule the group runs on: nothing said here leaves, including to your own team and your own investors. #apply is how membership works, because an open founders server becomes a promotion channel within a month. The Circle is the substance: #the-hard-thing is where a founder brings the problem they cannot say out loud anywhere else, from a cofounder falling out to running out of money; #ask-the-room takes narrower questions; and #wins exists because founders systematically under-celebrate. Numbers is the channel that separates this from a networking group: members post real revenue, growth and burn on a monthly cadence in #monthly-metrics, and #metric-questions is where the follow-up happens. It works because everyone posts, and it dies the moment posting becomes optional. Accountability runs #quarterly-goals and #goal-check-in, a light monthly ping on what each founder committed to. Practice covers the shared craft: #hiring-and-firing, #fundraising-notes, #pricing-and-positioning and #tools-and-vendors. Voice has a Circle Call capped small enough that everyone speaks and a one-to-one Pair Room.

When to use it

Founders have advisors who want to look smart, investors who want good news and teams who need confidence, so the honest conversation has nowhere to go. This layout is a vetted room with a written confidentiality rule, a monthly metrics cadence everyone participates in, and a channel specifically for the problem you cannot say elsewhere. It stays small deliberately, because trust does not scale.

What makes it different

  • A written confidentiality rule that covers your own team and your own investors.
  • Everyone posts real monthly metrics, which is what separates this from networking.
  • A channel for the problem a founder cannot say out loud anywhere else.
  • Vetted membership, because an open founders server becomes a promotion channel.

Recommended Vetox setup

  • Applications

Run Applications on #apply so membership is vetted and the confidentiality rule means something.

  • Reminders

Set a monthly Reminder in #monthly-metrics, since the cadence is the whole mechanism and it decays without one.

  • Logs

Enable Logs so joins, leaves and role changes in a confidential room are visible to the facilitators.

  • Welcomer

Point Welcomer at #the-agreement so nobody is in the room before reading what the room requires.

Questions

How big can this get before it stops working?

Around twenty active founders. Past that, people stop recognising every name in the room and the honest posts stop, which removes the only reason the group exists. Groups that want to grow usually split into a second circle rather than expanding one, keeping each room small enough that a founder can post something difficult knowing exactly who will read it.

Why insist that everyone posts metrics?

Because selective disclosure poisons the channel. If posting is optional, the founders having a hard quarter go quiet, the channel fills with good news, and everyone else concludes they are uniquely failing. Universal participation is what makes a bad month postable, and a bad month posted honestly is the most useful thing in the server.

Does the confidentiality rule really cover investors?

It has to. A founder in this room may be discussing a decision their investors would react badly to, and if another member's investor hears about it the room is finished. The rule is stated as covering your own team and your own investors precisely because those are the two leaks people do not think of as leaks.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the group grow past the size where people speak candidly, which is usually around twenty.
  • Making metrics posting optional, after which only the founders having a good month post.
  • Admitting service providers and recruiters, which turns every conversation into a sales opportunity.

Consider instead

  • Accelerator Cohort The group is a batch going through a programme together with mentors and a demo day.
  • Indie Hacker Community You want an open community of solo builders rather than a closed, vetted circle.
